Five Movies That Popularized Sunglass Brands

Even on the silverscreen actors and actresses have to look cool, suave and mysterious. How do they do this? By wearing shades, of course. Nothing says mystery, danger and anonymity like sophisticated sunglasses hiding a pair of eyes. Sometime we don’t remember the movie, the actor or even the story; we just remember that they wore an awesome pair of sunglasses.
So what are movies that have popularized various brands of sunglasses over the years?

The Matrix

After in came out in 1999, The Matrix not only made rebellion against the system cool, they made wearing shades and trench coats cool again. So what did the good guys and bad guys wear? Those angled shades worn by Neo (Keanu Reeves) and the earpiece-free sunglasses worn by Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne) were from Blinde Design. Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) wore Vision. These sunglasses were reportedly specifically designed just for the movie, but now you can find replicas of those models online and almost anywhere. The rest of the cast reportedly wore Gucci.

Terminator

Arnold Schwarzenegger needed their clothes, their boots, their motorcycle. And he also needed their shades. In the “Terminator” movies, the last thing Schwarzenegger puts on before he goes off to blow stuff up is his sunglasses. Eyewear enthusiasts determined he wore the Gargoyle ANSI Classic in T1, the Persol 58230 in T2 and the Sama T3MBRS and T3MBKS models in T3. If you think those styles are currently out of fashion, don’t worry. They’ll be back.

For Agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) the shades were not just standard issue, they were part of the ensemble in Men in Black. It protected their eyes from the de-neuralizer and protected their identity from civilians. It also made them look sharp and spiffy cool. What did the two wear? It was the Ray-ban 2030 Predator.

The Blues Brothers

When two brothers (John Belushi and Dan Akroyd) needed to form a band to save their old Catholic home they needed to look like legit Blues musicians. That, of course, included the right clothes, the right hat and the right sunglasses. In their case this was the Ray Ban 5022.

The Thomas Crown Affair

We mean the original 1966 movie, not the 1999 remake. In the original movie, Thomas Crown (Steve McQueen) wears blue-tintedPersol 714 folding glasses. It became such a hit that Persol designed foldable sunglasses and named them after the popular actor. The Steve McQueen glasses have become a fashion statement in their own right, but it was the Persol 714 that would become one of the most iconic sunglasses in cinema history.
